About This Review

This review is part of our “Restaurants with Passion” series and as such our review was not done in our magazines typical candid style. The OutLaw knew our cameras were coming. This said, everyone we observed received similar food to what we were served plus attentive service. The staff also was good at recommending off menu house specials and described everything well. This is important when you have a menu like OutLaw Larry’s which features several hundred selections!

The review was done on a very busy Tuesday night. Just about every seat in the restaurant was taken plus the bar area was full. The wait to be seated was short, and despite being a “Kids Eat Free Night” plus “Taco Tuesday” special night the noise levels were minimal and children well-mannered.

The Review

Baby Back Ribs:
We found “OutLaw Larry’s” baby back pork ribs to be tender and flavorful. Unlike many of the trendy BBQ spots that claim to make great ribs OutLaw Larry’s ribs remained moist, tender and meaty despite being cooked to the point they fall off the bone. Deep BBQ Smoke flavoring permeates the meat without overpowering, and Larry’s special BBQ sauce is served on the side for those who like sauce. The ribs are good dry style; but we preferred the slightly sweet sauce.

Beef Ribs: Larry’s  beef ribs were also tender with the flavorful meat falling off the bone without being so overcooked as to look like shredded BBQ beef. The quality of these ribs is above average… and price way low. Very good beef ribs.

Steaks: Our review included two types of steaks from the OutLaw menu… we enjoyed a perfectly cooked Rib-eye steak plus a sampling of  Larry’s top secret marinated “Hanger Steak,” which is not a menu item. The rib-eye was grilled medium rare, tender and juicy, but overshadowed by the flavorful “Hanger Steak.” For the price, the fork tender Hanger Steak was our favorite; not to be found at many other steakhouses... it is a must try item. Exceptionally good!

Chicken: Also served was OutLaw Larry’s signature grilled chicken. Our serving was a whole ½ side chicken serving which included the leg and wing. Of note was unlike many budget friendly steakhouses OutLaw Larry’s chicken was not overcooked to the point the wing tips were dried out or burned off. The chicken was fork tender, and still reasonably juicy.

Salads: One of our favorites was Larry’s Tequila Shrimp and Chicken breast dinner salad which is served up in a crispy Taco Salad style shell, but with all dressings on the side. The salad includes a generous dollop of sour cream plus Guacamole and your choice of dressings; all on the side. This makes this a perfect choice for health or diet conscious diners. The generous quantity of tequila lime marinated shrimp makes this salad enjoyable.

We were also impressed with the Outlaw’s deep-fried breaded shrimp… typical in size and quality to most upscale steakhouses, but cooked perfectly and at a fraction the price found at many chain steakhouses. As a review note, many these favorite items are served up on OutLaw Larry’s Steakhouse signature sampler platter for 2… highly recommended, and an impressive presentation.

We can also recommend Larry’s incredible burgers, because we have enjoyed them on several candid visits to the Outlaw Steakhouse.

Favorite Items; OutLaw Larry’s Hanger Steak with Larry’s Coleslaw a close second. We discuss more about the Hanger Steaks in our extended review notes… but Larry’s Coleslaw is made fresh with just the right amount of creamy sweet slaw dressing. We loved the coleslaw.

Improvements
This may seem nitpicky, but both reviewers felt the halibut although flavorful was slightly overcooked. This is more a preference observation, because we like our fish slightly undercooked by most restaurants standards. Serving size of the fish was adequate and presentation done well, plus it came with one of our favorite side dishes Larry makes… the coleslaw!
