About This Review

This featured review was done as part of a series California Online is doing on Steakhouses and BBQs. While many consider Pinnacle Peak as being less than their favorite steakhouse, we feel it important to review them because they are also one of the original Southern California Steakhouses.

Pinnacle Peak has an interesting history, and serves up a lot of value for their customer’s hard earned dining dollar.

About Pinnacle Peak
If you enjoy steak, the Pinnacle Peak Steak House is one of those dining experiences that needs to be tried to be appreciated. What can only be described as a “No Frills” steakhouse, the Colton Pinnacle Peak has been at the same location inside an older shed style building for over 30 years. But than it is important to remember huge Steaks are pretty much the entire story here... everything else is secondary.

The facilities are better viewed at night when the building and decor are overlooked due to the mouthwatering aroma of steaks sizzling on the mesquite fired BBQ.  This said, the dirt and gravel parking lot are as rustic as the restaurant’s interior. If viewed during the day, many might assume the outdated building had been abandoned for years; nothing about the building itself gives warning of the lines that can be found waiting when the door opens for dinner! (and we are talking about one simple, single 36-inch wide front door… no frills here either).

If you're a vegetarian - don't even drive by Pinnacle Peak! Potatoes and desserts aside, the only thing without meat are the salads - and that’s only if you hold on the bacon bits! But vegetarians aside; carnivores on a budget will find a lot to love about Pinnacle Peak... the steaks are huge!

The Menu and Food Review
The Pinnacle Peak Steak House menu features mostly large cuts of meat, grilled over old west style mesquite charcoal. Center stage on the menu is Pinnacle Peak’s famous “Trail Boss Steak,” which is a massive 30-ounce Porterhouse; or the “Cowboy Steak,” which is a 22-ounce T-Bone Steak. For more typical appetites there is the “Kansas City” which is a 16-ounce bone-in New York Steak, or the popular “Cowgirl Steak” which is a 15-ounce T-Bone. Also served are a limited selection of Filets, Pork Chops, Ribs, Chicken and burgers; and everything comes with a salad, side of “Country-Style” beans and bread… that's it!! All entrees are served a la carte; you pay extra for any sides such as baked potatoes and corn.

The “Ranch Style” beans and bread are about as plain as cooking gets… just pull out a few slices of plain white bread with cold butter served on the side, and open a can of very bland beans. The salad is better, but only the very basics. The same with the baked potatoes... nothing fancy. The corn is a complete disaster; just plain over cooked, mush on a cob. All of this is very disappointing, no matter what excuse Pinnacle Peak gives for their “cooking style.” But once again, the story is the steaks.

From a size standpoint the steaks are huge, but unfortunatly pulled straight from the cooler and thrown onto the hot grill. This explains why on the huge 30-ounce “Trail Boss Steak” we ordered “medium-rare,” the center was still slightly cool and very rare. This is not a problem on the "Smaller Sized" steaks, which are still a plate full of tasty eating.

The taste of the mesquite charcoal comes through wonderfully in the flavor of the meat, which is what Pinnacle Peak is all about... serving up the taste of the old west “Cattle-Drive Style” BBQ. Nothing is overly seasoned or prepared in any gourmet manner… simply seasoned with salt & pepper and possibly dipped in a mild BBQ sauce.
