Fresh Seafood for many “Foodies” is a passion… and in the Inland Empire fairly difficult to find. Finding the type of Just Caught Seafood that the “Wright Gourmet” enjoyed growing up on the beaches of Newport Beach in the 1960s and early 1970s is darn near impossible; but it exists right on the shores of Redlands Blvd. in beautiful Redlands, California! Located 70 plus miles from the water, Little Fisherman Restaurant is a throw back to the fresh fish markets that once were only found along the packing house of Newport’s Cannery Row. The fish was really fresh there, literally caught only hours before being served on that same day… as is the seafood at Little Fisherman Seafood in Redlands!

Seafood Hand Selected Fresh Daily
Unlike the legendary Dory Seafood Market of Newport Mike Kalina, owner of Little Fisherman Seafood doesn’t catch the fish himself any longer, but leaves early every morning to hand pick the choicest seafood from the San Pedro wholesale fish markets his family help start. Mike actually worked on the commercial fishing boats growing up… he knows what fresh fish is supposed to look like!

THE FRESHEST FISH TACOS IN THE INLAND EMPIRE
Fish Taco Thursday at Little Fisherman Seafood

So if you are lucky enough to remember the “Fish & Chips” and fresh “Fish Tacos” of the Newport shoreline fish markets you are in for a treat… if not, you are still in for a treat. Mark on your calendar; Thursdays are “All You Can Eat Fish Taco Lunch” at the Little Fisherman Seafood Restaurant. This is absolutely the best fresh fish tacos to be found anywhere in the Inland Empire! Nothing overly fancy, but depending on what was fresh that day, loads of fresh red snapper, cod, sea bass, halibut and even tuna grilled up into fish tacos. Beans, Rice, Salsa and chips are served up with all the making for Baja style fish tacos… all you can eat lunch for about $9.00! Pair this with an ice cold beer or soda and you have a culinary trip back to the days when long lines of customers stretched out the doors of the “Crab Cooker” and “Delaney’s Fish Markets” just off Cannery Row in Newport Beach’s commercial fishing hey days. Simply the best!!

 Little Fisherman Seafood Market
Like the amazing fish market restaurants that made Newport’s Seafood and Cannery so famous Little Fisherman Seafood Market area stocks only the very freshest daily catch. The menu changes daily based on what looks best, but usually includes Alaskan Salmon, California Halibut or Alaskan Halibut, Swordfish, Sea Bass, Catalina Sand Dabs, Shark, Red Snapper and Tuna to be found anywhere short of the Dory Fleet itself. You select your choice right off of the ice in their freshly stocked cases.

 Little Fisherman Seafood Restaurant
The Little Fisherman Seafood Chefs cook up your selection of their fish straight from the market case for dine-in and carry-out orders daily serving up a variety of fish and chips featuring cod, sea bass, halibut, shrimp and calamari steaks either grilled or deep fried. If it wasn’t fresh that day… it is not in the seafood case; Nobody serves fresher fish!

The Bad Side of Little Fisherman Seafood
Little Fisherman Seafood has been a family owned fish market and seafood restaurant since 1998, and during that time has never learned how to predict just when they are going to run out of fresh fish… so when it’s gone; IT’S GONE for the day, and owner Mike Kalina would not have it any other way.

 Little Fisherman Seafood History…
Redlands freshest Seafood all begins with the birth of the San Pedro Fish Markets; when Italian fisherman Neil Caserma and his brothers, Dominic, Raphael, Francisco, Salvatore, and Giovani Caserma were from Ischia Ponte, Italy. They immigrated to the United States in the early 1900's. With hard work and several small boats, the Danny Boy, Grub Steak, Santa Maria, and Dante Aleghiere, they launched a fishing business. Fellow Italian, Yugoslavian, Greek, and Portuguese fishermen joined them and the San Pedro fishing industry resulted.  As more immigrant fishermen built their own boats and worked the local waters, the region became known as Fish Harbor. In those days they fished for Squid, Mackerel, Bonita, Sea Bass, Rock Cod, Sand Dabs, and Barracuda.

All fish were caught by set lines. Large balls of fishing line with a hundred hooks baited and set by hand; then dropped to the ocean floor. There were no motors in use back than, so the men rowed for hours much like in the movie “The Old Man and the Sea”. They fished all day and night until their boats were filled. As they rowed back to San Pedro, they yelled out to each other across the darkness and described what they had caught. They entered the harbor cold, wet, hungry and tired where they unloaded their boats and went back to fish again.  The fishing industry has always been dangerous work and to this day, remaining one of the most dangerous jobs in the world as witnessed by the popular cable TV Show “Most Dangerous Jobs in the World.” But the seafood does not get any fresher, and it is still caught fresh daily to this day for Little Fisherman Seafood Markets.

Neil Caserma's Grandson, Michael Kalina holds to the highest standards selecting only the finest fish every day for his seafood market and restaurant. You want to try this amazing little restaurant soon.
