Zendejas Mexican Grill is a popular chain of Southern California Sports Bar Restaurants. Capitalizing on their signature “Sports Bar” motif, founder Tony Zendejas (born May 15, 1960 in Curimeo, Michoacan, Mexico) is a football placekicker who played for the Houston Oilers, the Los Angeles Rams, the Atlanta Falcons, and the San Francisco 49ers. Now long retired from football, Tony Zendejas is perhaps more famous for their growing restaurant chain.

As a Mexican Style Restaurant the food itself, such as that served on the buffet tends to be bland, and only moderately spiced. For those of us that prefer a more liberal hand with the seasoning it is important to note that the goal is to please the masses when serving a buffet. What is bland to me is too spicy for the next, with the balance becoming a “No Win” middle ground of mediocre tasting buffet.

The buffet aside, Zendejas Mexican Grill serves up a diverse menu ranging from breakfast items to traditional Mexican dishes, and even grilled chicken and steak; all in a Mexican style. We have found the Carnitas, Chile Colorado and Barbacoa items to be above average with our favorite menu item being the Sizzling Fajitas. The shrimp items and fish tacos are always a winner also.

With the fajitas everyone at our table is able to fine tune the ingredients to their liking adding salsas, onions, cilantro, sour cream and guacamole as desired. This addresses our culinary likes without attempting to place an order for the “Standard” combination plates we find boring and bland.

In general Zendejas Mexican Grill tends toward serving a menu designed to compete with many of the other low to moderately priced Mexican style restaurants resulting in a potentially bland and boring offering. This once again to support the likes of the general public.

This has not affected the popularity of the Zendejas Mexican restaurant chain, nor to say that the food is in any way bad; it just does nothing to set itself apart from the hoard of mid-priced similar dining spots from a dining standpoint. It is fair to point out that our (extensive) surveys have shown that after a few drinks in the Sports Bar the food quality seemed to improve dramatically… so the potentially mediocre food is not as important as the beer temperature.

Now that we have upset numerous of our readers (and the Zendejas family), please consider that I’m not sure Tony Zendejas ever set a goal to serve “Gourmet” Mexican Food, as much as developing a popular sports bar… which Zendejas is! The chips, salsa and finger food combine to make the tacos, beer and margaritas all that more enjoyable while watching the “Big Game” with friends. This "Big Game Feel" is the key to the hugely successful Zendejas chain.

While “The Sports Bar” markets "Alcohol, Pretty Girls and Big Game" to college aged “fans” with lots of beer themed “singles” advertising the “Zendejas Restaurant” itself remains popular with the family set because the sports bar area is separate from the dining areas. This has been very well thought out and is both “Child” and “Family Friendly” while providing an impressive party and “happy hour” scene. Very enjoyable even for a fat, middle aged, ugly food critic like the Wright Gourmet!!

Both the Restaurant and the Sports Bar areas are very comfortable with a dressed down casual style. Service is friendly and attentive with menu prices ranging in the low to moderate range. Popular with the business lunch set is the buffet which is priced under $10.00; making it a lunch time bargain.
